The streets of downtown San Bernardino came alive on February 1 as the Annual San Bernardino Lunar Festival brought together families, performers, and vendors to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

The festival was held at Court Street Square from 11a.m. to 8p.m., and it featured traditional lion dances, cultural performances, artisan stands, and many food vendors that demonstrated the region’s multicultural spirit.

California Culture Festival organized the celebration to honor Lunar New Year traditions while also incorporating the cultural diversity of the Inland Empire. One of the stage performances was Tierra de Mi Padre, a Folklórico dance dedicated to Mexico. For first-time attendee Santiago Gomez, 21, this performance was his favorite part of the event.

“The kids dancing were so cute and it was cool to see the Jalisco representation,” Gomez said. “I didn’t expect to see something that celebrated my own culture at a Chinese New Year event, but it was a great surprise.”

Even though this is the festival’s second year, many vendors have already made it a tradition. Erick and Mayra Lopez, owners of Mamacitas Candle Co., returned from last year selling soy wax candles, wax melts, and car diffusers. One candle was named “La Toxica,” and the ladies love these.

“It’s good to be back here,” Mayra Lopez said. “We love the energy and it’s a great way for small businesses like ours to sell our products and connect with people. We get a lot of followers on Instagram after events like these.”

Jeanette, a vendor from a Mexican food truck, also noted that the mix of cultures at the event created a welcoming atmosphere. Her carne asada fries were delicious!

“There’s something for everyone here,” she said. “People come for Lunar New Year celebrations, but they also get to experience different foods, music, and traditions.”

Live music, bounce houses, and a bustling marketplace offered something for all ages. This event might just become a staple in San Bernardino’s annual celebrations. As attendees and vendors look forward to next year, the festival continues to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the diverse community of the Inland Empire.
