An average Thursday morning at CSUSB was quickly turned into an informational event as student’s gathered around a table that was sharing health based resources for those willing to listen.
Many students may walk by this table and just think that it is just another event going on at CSUSB, but it is really something eye-catching when spotted. On Jan. 30, 2025, this table was dedicated to the Student Health Center of CSUSB, a resource many students do not know about. It was only right to go straight to the source, the employees running the table. Employees, Kayla Helmick, Katherine Mirafuentes, and Kaitlyn Meyers took a minute to discuss what the health center’s purpose is at CSUSB and why many students do not know what to do with this resource.
In an overview, Katherine shared that the student health center is a building on campus that provides students with services and resources such as immunizations, testing, and even primary care that is at no cost for students. For example, Katherine is currently focusing on encouraging students to take a digital detox from phones and other everyday devices. “It is important for students to take a step back and realize how electronics have an impact on us. I will be sharing other ideas in my zoom discussion that gives students ways to interact.” says Katherine. This zoom will be taking place on March 20, 2025 and is interactive with games and prizes while still sharing more information based on this topic.
On another end, Kaitlyn’s topic to share with students was based on nutrition. There are different ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but nutrition is the main portion Kaitlyn focuses on. “Micro and macro nutrients are something I cover in my presentation. Many people do not know the difference between them, it is important to understand what they are to maintain balance.” explains Kaitlyn. This important matter will be covered through a zoom meeting on Feb. 6, 2025 that explains healthy eating to those who are unsure of where to start.
Lastly, Kayla pivoted to discuss something many college students go through but do not have resources to fight the battle. This matter was mental health, specifically depression. Kayla shared her plan to spread awareness and resources with those battling with their depression. “My presentation is called Beyond the Blue. I will go over statistics from those in college who suffer with their mental health.” says Kayla. This topic will also be covered through zoom on April 10, 2025 and is for those unsure of where to turn to in times of uncertainty.
The employees also shared that many people do not know about the student health care center because they are unsure of where to go both in person or online. This is something they hope will change over time.
These presentations are just as useful as services provided by the health center, this is their way of marketing the center and helping students who may not have support anywhere else. The student healthcare center is located in the HC-101 building. Appointments for services can be made through a student’s Patient Portal located in their MyCoyote browser. Other promotional work is done through the center’s Instagram (@csusb_shc) along with more information on these presentations as the dates approach.
The health center is here to help students when they need it, it seems as if many students did not know how to use this resource. Now that some information has been shared about how it can be accessed, it is looking optimistic that this narrative can be changed.
